You have a split ZIP archive with a missing part. Before you do anything else, identify the naming style. Two styles exist. WinZip/Info-ZIP style names parts name.z01, name.z02, and so on, with the final piece named name.zip. 7-Zip style names them name.zip.001, name.zip.002, and so on. You hold some parts, but not all. This page tells you how to open what you have, what you can pull out, and what is gone for good.
Two Naming Styles for Split Archives
WinZip / Info-ZIP Style (.z01, .z02, .zip)
The archive is chopped into pieces named name.z01, name.z02, and so on. The final piece is always name.zip. That .zip file holds the central directory, the master list of every file and where its bytes live. You must open the .zip piece. Do not touch the .z01 parts directly. Your tool reads them automatically once you feed it the final piece.
7-Zip Style (.zip.001, .zip.002)
Parts are named name.zip.001, name.zip.002, and so on. Open the .001 file. The software chains the rest automatically. The header lives in .001, so the directory is not locked to the last piece.
Requirements for Opening a Split Archive
Before you attempt extraction, check three things:
- Put every part in the same folder.
- Restore the original names. If a browser saved a .z01 file as .z01.zip, strip the extra extension.
- For WinZip-style, you need the .zip piece. For 7-Zip style, you need the .001 piece.
Missing the .zip or the .001? Standard tools cannot open the set. The software needs that starting point to read the file list and begin work.
How to Open a Split Archive When All Parts Are Present
You have every part. Here is what to do:
- Place all parts in one folder. Do not rename any of them.
- WinZip/Info-ZIP style: locate the final piece, the .zip file, and open it with your ZIP tool. Leave the .z01 files alone.
- 7-Zip style: locate the .001 file and open it. The software finds .002, .003, and the rest on its own.
- Extract as you would from a normal ZIP.
If the archive was split using Info-ZIP's zip command, you can join the pieces into a single file. Run this command: zip -s 0 split.zip --out single.zip. It produces one ZIP named single.zip from the split set split.zip. Then extract normally.
What Happens When a Part is Missing
A missing part means no full extraction. Some files may still come out. A file whose data sits entirely inside the parts you have can be recovered. A file that straddles a missing part cannot.
Say you hold parts 1 and 3. Part 2 is gone. Any file that starts in part 1 and ends in part 2 is lost. A file that fits wholly in part 1, or wholly in part 3, might be extractable. It depends on the archive structure and your tool. Some ZIP tools try to pull out whatever they can reach. They fail if the central directory is absent. In WinZip style, that directory lives in the final .zip piece. Lose that, and the file list is gone.
No repair tool can recreate bytes that were never saved.
Realistic Salvage Options
When the final piece is missing (WinZip style)
You have all the .z01 parts but not the .zip. The central directory is absent. Some tools scan the .z01 files for file headers and attempt extraction. This is unreliable.
When the first piece is missing (7-Zip style)
Without the .001 file, the header is gone. The remaining parts are orphaned. You cannot open them.
Renaming problems
A part saved with an extra extension, like .z01.zip, is common after a browser download. Rename it to the correct extension and try again.
Info-ZIP join command
The join command fails if any part is absent. It requires every piece. It will not produce a usable file.
You can only salvage files entirely contained in the parts you hold. Missing data stays missing.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Most problems come from simple errors. Check these before you assume data loss:
- Opening the wrong file. WinZip style: open the .zip, never the .z01. 7-Zip style: open the .001.
- Renaming parts. Keep the original names. A renamed piece breaks the chain. If a browser added an extension, rename it back.
- Parts in different folders. Put them all in one place. Extraction fails if they are scattered.
- Missing the final piece. Without the .zip (WinZip) or the .001 (7-Zip), you cannot start extraction normally.
If you see a spanned zip archive error, run through these four points first.
What to Do with a Damaged or Incomplete Archive
You have tried everything. The archive is still incomplete. Two paths remain:
- Accept the loss. The missing piece held critical data and no backup exists. That data is gone. No tool creates data that was never captured.
- Try a repair tool. Tools like zip.repair attempt recovery from damaged ZIP archives. They cannot recreate missing data from a missing part. If the archive is merely corrupted, not missing a piece, a repair tool might help. For split sets with a missing part, the tool only works with the pieces you supply.
Prevention beats salvage. Before extraction, confirm every part downloaded and kept its original name.
